Frederick Health Unveils New Kinetic Sculptures at the Village

Frederick Health is pleased to announce the donation of two new kinetic art pieces and their subsequent installation at the Frederick Health Village. These sculptures join the three kinetic art pieces that were installed at the Village last year. Kinetic art is a form of artistic expression that contains moving pieces and images that change based on the viewer's perspective and factors such as wind or light. The art's appearance will change as the viewer and the piece move.

Created by Thomas Sterner and generously donated by Drs. Carmen Hernandez & Manny Casiano, Water Lily with Dragonfly is designed to express beauty and simplicity with a shiny light-reflecting sanded stainless steel floral kinetic sculpture and wind-catching petals and integrated solar powered lights. Using a planishing hammer technique, Sterner created strong concave petals and heated the stainless steel at selected areas to add yellow and blueish hues. The sculpture has two aligned and smooth-turning interior thrust bearings, spans 8 feet in width, and reaches 8 feet in height.

The second sculpture, Rotary Lotus, was created by Bernard Gouin, Charles-Etienne Gouin & Doug Fauth. It is being donated by Greg Light. Designed to induce peace, serenity, and a contemplative state, Rotary Lotus is a four-level counter-revolving kinetic sculpture expressing our internal movements in a holistic perspective. It is made of aluminum petals with welded wind-catching cavities and is crowned at the top by a ring of aluminum wind-catching pistils. The artwork is powder-coat painted, spans 6 feet in height, 9 feet in width, and reaches 8 feet in height.

These sculptures had previously been displayed along the popular Carroll Creek Linear Park in downtown Frederick.
"We have always benefited from a gracious and giving community," said Dr. Cheryl Cioffi, Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer with Frederick Health. "These generous efforts continue to assist Frederick Health in creating a beautiful, healing environment for our community.”
