The Founding of Frederick Health

Frederick Health, formerly known as Frederick Memorial Hospital, was founded in 1902 by Emma Smith. She recognized a need for a hospital in Frederick community and was dedicated to establishing a location to provide the ill and injured with comfort and care. In the late 1890s, Emma rallied the community to the cause and secured $8,000 to open Frederick Health through donations. In July of 1901, the cornerstone for the hospital was laid. On May 2, 1902, the hospital opened its doors, which have remained open every day since.  

What began as a small hospital of a dozen beds with an "accident room" for emergencies has grown into a state-of-the-art healthcare system with 4,000 team members, over 25 locations, and a network of specialty providers. From our humble beginnings to the modern day, Frederick is now recognized as a national leader in innovation, quality care, and patient outcomes.
