Flu vaccines protect against the flu and keep you from getting sick this season. They prevent millions of illnesses and flu-related provider visits each year. From 2019-2020, for example, the CDC reports that flu vaccination prevented an estimated 7 million influenza illnesses, 3 million influenza-associated medical visits, and 100,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations.

Flu vaccines work by causing antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccinations. These antibodies protect against infection with the viruses found in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that researchers indicate as the most common during the upcoming season.

A flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu.

Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every flu season, with rare exceptions. Flu prevention is especially crucial for people with a high risk of developing serious flu complications and other health factors that increase your risk. The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine each year by the end of October.
