James M Stockman Cancer Institute
Designed to promote healing, provide support, and create a treatment experience unlike any other.
Feelings of strength, renewal, hope, joy, energy, and courage inspired the design of the James M Stockman Cancer Institute. From the interior and exterior design to the clinical workflows and treatment planning, the Optimal Healing Environment philosophy was used as a guiding force for this innovative and unique facility.

The Optimal Healing Environment
The Optimal Healing Environment model was used to design and build the James M Stockman Cancer Institute.
Our physicians, clinicians, and staff are trained in the application of this model to promote healing and alleviate stress for patients during their cancer experience.
Happy Staff Promote Patient Satisfaction
The Optimal Healing Environment philosophy recognizes that happy staff will promote patient satisfaction and foster therapeutic relationships between our clinicians, patients, and their family members.
Public Spaces
Using the color orange to promote feelings of energy, public spaces within the cancer institute incorporate various tones of orange, natural textures, and nature based art. The design of each public space feels familiar, comforting, and reassuring.
Infusion Center
A palette of green tones and views of the healing garden evoke feelings of renewal within the infusion center.
Our infusion center features twenty custom designed pods with comfortable chairs, surrounded by expansive views of the healing garden. Four private infusion rooms are available for patients who require or prefer more privacy during treatment. A specially designed adolescent room is outfitted with age-appropriate furnishings and accessories.
Staff work areas are located in the read center of each of the infusion areas, providing a sense of privacy for our patients while maintaining quite observation by our attentive team members.
Oncology & Hematology
Patient areas within the Oncology & Hematology area are designed with inspiring, calming, natural images using tones of yellow to inspire joy.
Patient changing rooms are accessible from exam rooms to support on-treatment medical evaluation visits.
Privacy and a sense of control are paramount to patient comfort. All measures to maintain both are purposefully driven into the design using themes of blue to evoke feelings of hope. The placement or mirrors and opening position of doors support patient privacy.
Computer placement, moveable carts, and shared work space support our strategy for clear and personal communication. This promotes informal coordinated care among staff and providers.
Chest Surgery
Patients of Frederick Health Chest Surgery will feel courageous surrounded by themes of nature and hues of purple. Newly diagnosed lung cancer patients are provided a nurse navigator to guide them through the diagnostic and treatment process.

Multidisciplinary Clinic
Newly diagnosed cancer patients may be seen in the multidisciplinary clinic at the James M Stockman Cancer Institute. The goal of this clinic is to provide patients with coordinated, timely treatment planning within a strengthening environment.
A surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist evaluate the patient during a single clinic visit. The nurse navigator develops this coordinated process, and the patient leaves the clinic with a treatment plan and understanding of their diagnosis. Exam rooms within the clinic were designed to be large and comfortable to support family participation during these visits.
Medical Team Support
Staff lounges and respite areas are provided to help maintain a health spirit for our team. A meditation room designed with soft lighting, comfortable furniture, and soft music will be a welcome environment for our team.
Picnic tables located on a private staff patio are located near the healing gardens, to provide a relaxing space for staff during lunch and free time.
Built for the community, by the community.
Planning and construction of the James M Stockman Cancer Institute was
completely funded by donations from generous members of our community
and local organizations. Located on the Rose Hill campus, the new institute
has been a collaborative design effort between Trinity: Planning, Design,
and Architecture and Smithgroup JJR, proudly managed by Hplex Solutions,
and constructed by Gilbane Building Company. This beautiful and carefully
designed environment promotes healing and relaxation, and brings a new
level of experience and compassionate cancer care to the Frederick community.
The $21 million James M Stockman Cancer Institute was truly built for the
community, by the community.
