Before Your Exam:
- You may have a preparation for your exam – you will be informed of this when you make your appointment.
- Dress comfortably- you may be given a gown to wear during your exam.
During Your Exam:
- In the exam room, you will be instructed to lie upon the exam table either on your back or side.
- The technologist will first spread a warm water-soluble gel on your skin over the area to be examined. The technologist will then press a transducer (a handheld device attached to the ultrasound machine) against your skin and move it back and forth to obtain the images.
- After the procedure is complete, the technologist will wipe the gel off of your body before you get dressed.
- Depending on the area of the body being examined, the exam can take between 20 and 60 minutes to complete.
After Your Exam:
- Technologists will be able to answer most questions that are not related to the results of the exam. A board-certified radiologist will interpret the images and provide a written report to your physician.
- The technologist performing your exam will give you further directions before you leave if needed.
- You will be able to resume normal activities after your ultrasound exam.
